FSHISD Seeks to Fill Vacancy on Board of Trustees

Members of the Fort Sam Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees perform an important service for the Fort Sam Houston community. As guardians of the public trust, they serve as advocates for public education and the Fort Sam Houston community.

The Fort Sam Houston ISD is soliciting nominees to be considered for a vacancy on the Board of Trustees. The person filling this vacancy would serve until September 2017 and may interview again for a two-year term. The position must be filled by either an active duty military member or civilian living on or employed by Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston. To serve as a board member, an individual must be 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen, a Texas resident, a registered voter and must not be a convicted felon. Trustees take an official oath and receive no compensation.

Fort Sam Houston ISD has a five-member Board of Trustees nominated by the Commander and appointed by Texas’ State Board of Education. Prior to formal nomination, a panel of representatives interviews board applicants and makes recommendations to the Commander.

Local Board of Trustees make decisions on a wide variety of issues and are responsible for approving district goals and priorities, overseeing their implementation, and monitoring results. Additionally, they must adopt policies that govern the district to ensure adherence to policy; hire and evaluate annually a superintendent; adopt an annual budget for the district; and inform the community about actions taken. To learn more about the role of a board member, two informational sessions are being held in building 2797 on Stanley Road. Those interested are encouraged to attend a session either on Tuesday, October 18 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, October 20 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
