World History uses Canvas because it is 1) what many colleges around the United States use, and 2) it offers advanced online learning features that will be used to enhance the learning experience in class.
For most students Canvas will be a new tool in their learning process, and like all new tools the person wielding it must learn how to use it successfully. The good news is that you don't have to wait until the start of school to begin learning how to use Canvas.
